You can't stop determined attackers. Heck, you probably can't even stop a disgruntled insider. The sooner you accept that and start minimizing the potential for damage, the better. So what's the magic skillset? Security-focused big data analysis? Encryption? Intrusion detection? All important, but no technical proficiency is more vital than what you may consider "soft skills" -- think correlating risk levels with business priorities, an ability to diplomatically kill projects that need killing, and deep understanding of budget realities.
